What the Bible says about
gratitude
Biblical gratitude is not forced optimism. The same writers who command thanksgiving also wrote entire laments. The instruction is to give thanks "in" all circumstances, not "for" all of them, and that one preposition carries most of the weight.

In all circumstances, not for them
1 Thessalonians 5:18 is often read as a duty to be grateful for tragedy. The text does not say that. It says to keep giving thanks inside it, which is a different thing: recognizing that God stays good even when the situation is not.
Gratitude points at someone
Psalm 107:1 gives the reason before the thanks: "for he is good, his love endures forever." Biblical gratitude is not a trained mood. It is a response to a person.
What it does to the grateful
Colossians 3:15-17 ties thankfulness to peace, mutual teaching, and singing together. Giving thanks there is not a private wellness technique. It is what keeps a group of people bearable to one another.
