This page answers three questions about the text you read here: which translations are available, where the text of each one comes from, and who holds the rights to it.

Reading is free in all of them, with no account and no payment. The translation in use is always named in the reader.

How the text is displayed

The reader shows the biblical text and the verse numbers. Footnotes, section headings, cross-references, and study notes from printed editions are not part of what is displayed here.

Every text import is checked before it is stored: all 66 books have to be complete, and passages known to be distinctive of each translation have to show up where they belong. A file that fails that check never reaches the database.

Why these English translations and not others

The four English translations offered here are in the public domain, and that is exactly why they were chosen: none of them depends on a license negotiated with a publisher.

Widely used translations such as the NIV, ESV, NASB, NLT, NKJV, CSB, and The Message require a written license from the publisher in order to display the whole Bible, and the free quotas they publish run to a few hundred verses, against the roughly 31,000 in a Bible. The NET, often assumed to be free, allows non-commercial use only. Until there is a license, they do not appear here.

Translations under copyright

Where the table above says a translation is under copyright, the text belongs to the rights holder named there, not to us. It is displayed for personal reading and study.

Found an error in the text?

A typo, a missing verse, a wrong word: we want to know. Send us the reference (book, chapter, and verse) and the translation where you saw the problem, through the contact page. We will fix it, and we are grateful for the report.
