What the Bible says about
forgiveness
Forgiveness stands at the center of the gospel: we have been forgiven much, so we forgive. The Bible never says it is easy, and it never pretends the pain is imaginary. It says that forgiveness frees the one who forgives first, and that it is possible because God forgave first.

Seventy times seven
When Peter offers to forgive seven times, Jesus multiplies the number (Matthew 18). Not to turn forgiveness into arithmetic, but to take it out of the ledger entirely. Anyone still counting has not let go yet.
Forgiving is not saying it did not hurt
Biblical forgiveness is not pretending the offense was small, and it does not always mean restoring the relationship to what it was, since reconciliation takes both sides. It is releasing the debt and leaving the justice of it with God.
The forgiveness we received
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us" (1 John 1:9). The ability to forgive grows out of the experience of being forgiven, carried away as far "as the east is from the west" (Psalm 103:12).
